Drill away

After my run Sunday, little by little, I started feeling a pain on the inside of my mouth on the right side.  It seemed to be getting worse at night before bed. I think it’s because of all the eating through the day was hurting a tooth, I just wasn’t sure which one. At first, I thought I was getting my wisdom teeth.

Thank god for insurance, I made a dentist appointment for today. I didn’t want the pain to get worse as race day gets closer. How horrible would that be? Trying to run 13 miles with a toothache, I don’t think so.

Today was my appointment. This was a new dentist. (I haven’t been to the dentist in almost 10 years, I know bad fairy) I walked in and stepped into the early 90′s!! You know, dark wood cabinets, flooring, pictures of models with white teeth and teased hair! It was great! I’m 90′s obsessed. The music, the clothes, t.v. shows, hair.  I can’t seem to get enough.

X-rays were taken. Results: infected tooth. Ugh I was embarrassed. Apparently it started out as a little cavity and then turned into decay. Too much for you? Sorry.  He did say I brush and care for my teeth very well! :)

x-ray of my lovely decaying tooth

So he numbed me up and started drilling to take out as much of the decay as he could. The bad news is I need a root canal!!! He says ” it’s not as horrible as everyone says”. I thought oh really, when was the last time you had a root canal! Seriously.

these tools scared the hell out of me!!

Well im glad I have dental insurance because if not this would cost me an arm and a tooth! Yeah I know, pretty bad. Time for a dose of pain medication! :)

Survey

I’ve acquired a few new readers to my blog (thanks for subscribing) within the last couple of weeks. So to get to know me better and have some fun, I came up with a survey.

1. What is your all-time top 3 t.v. shows?
1. E.R.- it first aired when I was in health professions high school.
The medical jargon kept me so intrigued! Oh and of course. George Clooney!

2. Two broke girls- I think its hilarious! You should know, it doesn’t take much to make me laugh! :D

3.  Punky Brewster- don’t judge me! We have the dvds and my girls watch them everyday! (I’m not kidding)

Punky Brewster

2.  Favorite type of music?
Country. I love the emotion and stories that come through the songs.

3. How do you stay motivated to keep working out?

I am inspired by Jamie Eason. She doesn’t force her lifestyle on others and seems so grounded and approachable even with all her success. I also love motivational quotes. My background on my phone says “it’s called a workout because it requires the effort. Without the work, it would just be an easy out”.

4. Favorite food product?
Almond butter. I know everyone raves about peanut butter. I like peanut butter, but almonds are the greatest thing for me.

5. What is your biggest pet peeve?
Gym goers who talk on the phone during their whole workout! You need to put your all into your workout or you will not see results. There are a few women that have been going for years and have not changed one bit! There is one woman who walks in with a big gulp full of soda!! I’ve looked, its soda!!

6. Favorite food made on your blog?
Vegan pumpkin bread. I love the combination of pumpkin, walnuts, banana, and coconut milk. It simple but very moist and delicious.

7. What do you like to do when you have free time?

pumpkin spice frozen yogurt

I like to window shop with my girls while enjoying self-serve frozen yogurt. (Its more fun to serve it yourself!)

So do you know anymore about me? I hope so!

Answer a question or two in the comments section. If you have a blog, post it and maybe your readers will find out a little more about you!

souper!

I love soup! During the winter months, I can eat soup everyday. It is hearty and filling, but still low in calories and fat depending on the kind. Of course, nothing beats homemade soup. I do get scared sometimes to add odd ingredients to make a soup. But you never know when it could turn out great.

That exact thing happened today. I’ve always heard of people putting apples in soup. I didnt get it before. It is a fruit. Now I get it and love it. It adds a tartness to the soup depending on the kind of apple. I dont think its a good idea to put sweet apples in though.

Who knew carrots and apples heated go so well together?

This is a great simple soup that I will be using over and over to satisfy my winter cravings!

Carrot and apple soup

Ingredients:

  • 1 tbsp. Coconut oil
  • 3 medium carrots, chopped
  • 2 medium apples, chopped (I used granny smith)
  • 1 whole onion, chopped
  • pinch of salt
  • 1 tsp. Ground ginger
  • pinch of sugar (I used sucanat)
  • 3 cups vegetable broth
  • ½ cup pumpkin puree
  • 1-2 cups extra water
  • juice of ½ lemon

Instruction:

  1. In large pot heat oil over medium heat. Saute onion for about 2 minutes. Add salt, ginger and sugar. Cook until onions are soft.

Add carrots and and apples. Cook for 5 minutes. Add vegetable broth. Cover and cook for 15 minutes.

  2. Turn off heat. Puree mixture with immersion blender. If you dont have one, GET ONE! Seriously its a great tool to have in the kitchen. Smoothies, soups, sauces are a lot easier to make with one. Okay, moving on. I didnt puree every little piece, because I like a little bit of chunks in the soup.

  3. Return to heat. Add pumpkin puree and water until it reaches the consistency you want. Squeeze in lemon and cook on low for an additional five minutes.

Enjoy on a cold or even warm winter day. Just like we have here in Texas. A beautiful 70 degrees!!
