What’s Beautiful? You Are

As a part of Fitfluential, I am taking part in Under Armour’s What’s Beautiful 3.0. It’s a community of female athletes who create profiles saying what their recent short term goals are they would like to accomplish. There are groups you can join depending on what your goals are. There are so many. Some focus on being strong everyday, pregnant athletes, yoga enthusiasts, or just simply moving everyday. You complete challenges based on your goals.  I’ve only been doing it for a week and I’m already amazed at how much support these women give each other. Now to me that’s inspiring and BEAUTIFUL!

Under Armour is also giving away many swag bags and a trip to Costa Rica. So fun. I really like that there is an app for iPhone and Android devices. I can upload my challenges anytime.

Beauty to me means giving your all in everything you do. If it doesn’t make you happy, it’s not worth it. As far as working out goes, I run, I lift weights and practice yoga because I love it so much. No one forces me to do it. It has become a huge part of my life. I wouldn’t recommend those type of workouts to someone who doesn’t enjoy it. But if they did want to start exercising, I would recommend something based on what they like. It could be swimming, walking or a dance class. As long as your body is moving and you are having fun, you are becoming healthier.

We need to redefine beauty. As women, we need to encourage each other more and stop the comparisons. If you stay positive and keep pushing to be a better person, I think the negativity will just bypass you. That’s why I’m really excited for this. I’ve done a few challenges and I already see the support. My main goal is to complete a 5k in 25 minutes. If you read yesterday’s race recap, I’m actually much closer to that goal than I thought I’d be.

It’s simple to sign up and create your profile. Let me know if you do here in the comments so I can follow you and cheer you on too! I love that Under Armour is focusing on what women can do and not on what we look like.

Updates

1. Lots of ups and downs happened in these past few days. More ups then downs.

My mom informed me that the Boston Strong run was featured in the latest issue of the Tejano Tribune (a local community college newspaper). I was so excited! I wasn’t sure when or if my interview would be published. I still feel like it was one the best things I’ve ever been a part of.

2. I had a really good weekend up until Sunday. I’ll get to that in a minute. Saturday I went to boot camp once again and had a great time. Lots of high intensity training and 5 minutes of burpees. Do one and they seem simple, but after 5 minutes all of the muscles in your body are on fire. I was able to do 89 burpees. I wasn’t really sure what a good number was, but I was very proud of myself  because I know I pushed myself until I couldn’t anymore. It felt great.

Now on to Sunday; it was my rest day but I always do some sort of yoga everyday. I did a chest to wall handstand. I was comfortable in the pose. I walked my hands away from the wall and preceded to cartwheel to the side. My right shoulder locked and I completely lost my balance. On the way down I scraped my foot, hit my knee and landed on my head.

It didn’t seem so bad at first. I was in a little bit of pain but I’ve fallen before so I assumed I would be okay. I went on with the rest of my day. As each hour passed, I started feeling weak and very tired. That’s not very typical for me so I knew this was more than just a little fall. Even though I wanted to take a nap I knew I needed to stay up to make sure I didn’t have a concussion. I did have a headache. I just sat the rest of the day. It’s been a while since I’ve done that but my body really needed it.

I’ve learned it’s so important to listen to your body. I’m feeling 90% back to normal.

3. I’ve been nominated for best local blogger in what’s up magazine, an El Paso entertainment publication. So my local friends, if you are going to be attending the “dig” May 15th, I’d love it if you could vote for me.

World’s Fastest 10k 2013 (race recap)

Yes, I raced this weekend! It was a very last minute decision but I’ve wanted to take part in this race since I got the flyer at the half marathon packet pickup. I think anything with that starts with “world’s fastest” will get my attention.

World’s Fastest 10k is a USATF certified downhill course starting at the top of Transmountain Road at an elevation of 5200’ and finishing on Northwestern at 3800’

I usually don’t wear a race shirt to my races because usually they are too big or cotton t-shirts. I like the moisture wicking tees for any type of workout I do. Luckily the sponsors of this race supplied us with a great fitting technical Brooks tee. I really loved everything about it, even the neon green color. The Run Happy bracelet was a nice touch too. Thanks Brooks!

I woke up around 5 Sunday morning because I couldn’t stay in bed any longer. I was excited to run.

The race was set to start at 8 but I had to get there early to take a bus to the start line.

015

I was getting pretty restless just sitting in the bus.

We arrived at the start line around 7:20 and still had 40 more minutes to wait for the race to start. It was a little windy and cold up there. I just really wanted to start so that my body can start warming up.

IMG_20130407_072747

We finally started and I felt great. I felt like I was going a little faster than my usual pace, but knew it was okay because I was going to be running down hill the entire time.

Mile 1: 8:05 min/mi.

At mile 2 I began to speed up a little. I had a lot of energy and felt very light on my feet.

Mile 2: 7:51 min/mi.

Mile 3: 7:42 min/mi.

I was still feeling really good and steady. I didn’t start to feel tired until mile 5. That’s probably because the temperature was barely starting to climb. But I was still pushing all the way to the end!

Mile 4: 7:51 min/mi.

Mile 5: 7:53 min/mi.

Mile 6: 7:50 min/mi.

Final Time: 49:02!!!!

Looking at those numbers and I am still in disbelief. My previous 10k time was 56:44. I have never ran anything faster than maybe 8:20. And to be able to keep running faster at every mile, I am truly proud of myself.

Granted, I know it was all downhill but I feel like I have become a faster runner over the past few months. Being consistent really pays off, you just have to stick with your goals and work your butt off. Even during those cold winter months.

Running With My Daughter

MiMM

Marvelous is Chloe waking up on a Sunday morning on a day I was not planning on running and asking if I could take her running. I was beyond surprised! She has never really showed an interest in running, but she does support me 100%. I think I might be rubbing off on her without me knowing it.

IMG_20130324_181116

Chloe is very much like her dad. Very reserved, quiet, shy and doesn’t like to share too much what is on her mind. So when she asks for something like this, I am always excited to do whatever she wants.

IMG_20130324_104206_335

So we got ready pretty quick and headed out to Album Park. It’s our favorite park. I spent a lot of time there as a kid because I only lived a few a blocks away. Now I run there every Friday. My girls love it too.

It might have been my shortest run but I didn’t mind at all. We ran for a little while, I showed her how to run and breathe properly. We also had a chance to talk. Sometimes I don’t have a chance to talk to her for an extended amount of time and this gave us the time. It was amazing.

IMG_20130324_101654

Afterward, she made me do an obstacle course that she made up on the skate ramps that included push ups, jumping and running up the ramps. Really fun stuff!

IMG_20130324_103615_295

This morning my poor Chloe was feeling sore. I know she had a lot of fun. I know she asked to go running with me because she wanted some one on one time with her mommy. And that is marvelous.
