Marvelous In My Monday: 4/22/13

I had a pretty good weekend. After everything that happened this past week I just wanted to rest and spend time with my family. That’s just what we did on Friday. It was my nephew Aidan’s 2nd birthday so we went to my mom’s house to celebrate. I know my nephews love me but they don’t like to hang around me too much. I don’t really know what it is. Maybe that’s just the way boys are. I think I’m just used to my girls always wanting hugs and kisses constantly.

I think this was the only time he let me carry him that day. And yes, it was forced. He’s just too cute.

I also got a chance to hang out with my sisters. We all have very busy lives and don’t get to spend as much time all together as we’d like. We can spend hours together laughing and not even realize where the time has gone.

On Saturday morning, I went to a boot camp class at my gym for the 2nd week in a row. I thought last week was tough. But this week’s class literally kicked my butt. It was a squat-filled workout. I woke up Sunday morning so sore but I also love that feeling. I know I really pushed myself. This picture is from after last week’s class. Yes, I was tired.

After my boot-camp class I went to get a haircut. I was trying to grow out my hair, but it wasn’t working out for me. With my active lifestyle, I like being able to style my hair quick and still look presentable. This short style lets me do that. I think it also fits me well. You can’t really tell but it is vary tapered from the back and that’s what make it easy to style. (It was a no-makeup kind of day)

The rest of the weekend I spent getting nervous about the Boston Strong El Paso run that is happening tonight! I didn’t expect so many people to be excited as I am about it. There are over 90 El Pasoans so far that have RSVP’d. That makes me so happy and a little scared because I know I’m going to have to say a few words before we start. I know not everyone is going to be able to make it, but honestly I only expected about 30 RSVP’s.

I know it is going to be a lot of fun doing what we love; running and feeling the community support for Boston. I’m so excited to meet twitter, Facebook and Instagram friends that I’ve never had the chance to meet in person. I can’t wait to tell you all about it!

Weekly Yoga Practice: Week 6

Lots of stretching, bending and balancing this week in my yoga practice. I really do think yoga compliments my running and helped me be so quick at the World’s Fastest 10k. I’ve never felt this strong. Alright, let’s get to it.

Standing Splits: I’ve been trying to focus more on keeping my planted leg straight instead of trying to shoot my other leg as high as possible. This one is a work in progress that I think takes a lot of flexibility.

Jump into handstand splits: I was to stand with my legs apart and jump into handstand splits. I don’t know if it was just me, but I was able to spread my legs wider this way. Maybe it’s because my legs were already in that position.

Bandha practice: something very brand new for me. Showing your bandha has helped me have proper form in my handstands and be able to be straight as possible. When everything in your core is compressed together, your entire body feels controlled. I did need to fix a few things in this pose like looking down and stretching a little bit more out which I did in the next photo.

I took off my shoes so that only my toes were against the wall and looked down. I really felt like I could float for a few more moments in this position.

After my handstand practice, I was told to be brave and practice showing my bandha in the middle of the room. It was pretty scary not knowing if I would flip right over. But after recognizing when my hips are aligned with my shoulders, I was able to hold it for a few seconds!

Core work: I didn’t have anything to slide with, so I used my daughters skateboard. It worked very well. I did 3 sets of 8 and was really feeling those abs.

For a few fun poses: downward facing dog with my girls. This one was supposed to be with your dog but since we don’t have one, they filled in.

And finally, crow pose on my truck. So much fun and scary at the same time. Even more because the winds were up to 50 mph! Can you see the tress swaying. This pose changed my mood. I was feeling sluggish and tired then I did this and my energy was back up and I was ready to finish up the rest of my day. I always love when that happens.

Running With My Daughter

MiMM

Marvelous is Chloe waking up on a Sunday morning on a day I was not planning on running and asking if I could take her running. I was beyond surprised! She has never really showed an interest in running, but she does support me 100%. I think I might be rubbing off on her without me knowing it.

IMG_20130324_181116

Chloe is very much like her dad. Very reserved, quiet, shy and doesn’t like to share too much what is on her mind. So when she asks for something like this, I am always excited to do whatever she wants.

So we got ready pretty quick and headed out to Album Park. It’s our favorite park. I spent a lot of time there as a kid because I only lived a few a blocks away. Now I run there every Friday. My girls love it too.

It might have been my shortest run but I didn’t mind at all. We ran for a little while, I showed her how to run and breathe properly. We also had a chance to talk. Sometimes I don’t have a chance to talk to her for an extended amount of time and this gave us the time. It was amazing.

IMG_20130324_101654

Afterward, she made me do an obstacle course that she made up on the skate ramps that included push ups, jumping and running up the ramps. Really fun stuff!

IMG_20130324_103615_295

This morning my poor Chloe was feeling sore. I know she had a lot of fun. I know she asked to go running with me because she wanted some one on one time with her mommy. And that is marvelous.

El Paso Half Marathon Recap and Fairy Healthy Life is 2!

I put together all of my running gear after coming back from the race expo on Saturday.

021

I woke up right at 5 Sunday morning and was ready and fueled by 6. I felt a little nervous but not as nervous as last year. We had some trouble finding parking but I still had a few minutes to spare. There were so many more people than last year! I loved that!

Don’t you just love the sign my amazing daughters made!? They’re the best!

014

I started off a few minutes after 7 so that I wouldn’t have to be stuck with the crowds at the beginning but that still happened.

030

It was supposed to be windy but thank goodness the wind didn’t start to pick up until towards the end of the race. I was doing very well for the first 5 miles. Then the hills started. I didn’t remember there being so many hills. So of course my hip started bothering me. I slowed down a little so that I wouldn’t have to stop.

031

I was struggling starting at mile 10. I didn’t want to stop and walk but I had to for a few minutes. I started running again and told myself there’s only 5k left, that’s all. Then I could rest as long as I want. I was already emotional because on Saturday it was the anniversary of my dad’s passing. I know he was watching over me and I didn’t want to disappoint him. He always pushed me to do my best no matter what. I kept pushing and gave the rest my all.

By the way, you see the gentleman in the white shirt behind me? He thanked me after the race for pacing him! He said he was trying to to keep up with me till the finish. How awesome! Glad I could help.

046

Me getting my finisher’s medal. I have never been so happy to be finished! Overall, it was a great race. I’m proud of myself even if I didn’t reach my goal time. That just means there’s room for improvement and keeps me pushing harder. As long as I’m out there being fit and improving my life, I’m happy!

049

My official time was 2:06:45.

050

I love this picture because it shows me that I worked hard and I’m completely exhausted!! There isn’t a better feeling of knowing you worked hard for something you love.

052

055

Besides the actual race, this was one of the best moments. I got to meet my twitter friend, Jessica!! It’s crazy that I found her with all of the people around us. I saw her red hair and knew it was her right away. We hugged instantly. I knew she was going to be so sweet. She is a runner after all. Winking smile We are already planning on running some races together soon.

058

It is the Michelob Ultra Marathon so I had to have my beer after. I am so amazed at how organized the El Paso Marathon is. They always answered everyone’s questions right away and reminded us about everything we needed to do. The volunteers were so supportive and motivating throughout the whole race. The other runners were smiling, happy and even talkative while running. They are the friendliest people in El Paso! I’m looking forward to running this race every year that I can. Who knows, maybe one day I will work up the courage to run the full marathon.

059

In other news, yesterday was also my 2 year blogging anniversary here at Fairy Healthy Life! I love my blog like my baby mostly because of all the great friendships I have formed with you all. Come back tomorrow for a GIVEAWAY of my favorite healthy foods that I use constantly.

I’m linking up with Katie at Healthy Diva Life for Marvelous in my Monday. It sure is marvelous!!
